Week Beginning 30th September

Red Card to Racism Day! We talked about how important it is to treat everybody equally and celebrated how everyone is different. We wore red to show that we will not accept racism and linked our learning to the experiences of Harriet Tubman.

This week, we have been focusing on the life and achievements of Harriet Tubman as part of our Black History Month. We have found out that Harriet was a slave who escaped the USA, before returning multiple times to save others too. She then went on to campaign for equal rights! We have been using these facts to write our own fact files, ensuring we use conjunctions within our writing to extend ideas. We have also made inferences about Harriet and retrieved ideas from a related text.

In Maths, we have been counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s! We used concrete resources to help us group objects into these amounts. We are now moving on to Addition and Subtraction, so we recapped our bonds to 10 and 20 too.

We have been working with Mrs Batters in phonics to recap a range of Phase 5 sounds and use what we have learnt to create some super sentences! We then focused on the 'u' sound using the trigraph 'oul' and studied alternative spellings for the long 'ee' sound at the end of words.

We have continued to learn more about where we live in Geography, this week focusing on our village of Shireoaks. We talked about the difference in size and features of villages, towns and cities and found those closest to us on the map. We started to use atlases to find out more about our location!

We didn't let a little rain stop us from doing some exercise this week! We completed some Yoga in order to develop our strength, focus and flexibility.

In Science, we had a wonderful time this week being scientists! We investigated the suitability of a range of materials for building a house for the Three Little Pigs! We had to investigate whether the materials would keep the pigs dry, whether it would protect them and whether it could be blown down! In true scientist form, we then reported back on our findings and wrote to the Three Little Pigs.

In RE, we have started to learn more about Harvest in preparation for our Harvest assembly - please do come along! We have continued to use the computers to discuss our digital footprint and thought about rewards and consequences in PSHE. We also practised sketching facial shapes in Art, using our new knowledge of sketching pencils.
